E_EN_DEV_Topsham. BOND, Thomas IV. 1778-1781. Paper maker, Topsham 1778-1781, Exeter 1781-c.1794, Søllerød, Denmark 1794-1799, Asarum, Sweden 1799-1811, Skåne, Sweden 1811-1823. Born: 10 Jul 1756, Exeter (bap. 18 Jul Allhallows, Goldsmith Street), son of Thomas III. Married: Mary Steer born 1755 (bap. 30 Oct, daughter of William Steer, born 1726, and Mary Lane) 13 May 1777 Morchard Bishop by licence. Children: 1. son Thomas V bap. 3 Mar 1778, Topsham, later consultant at Strömma. After a careful description of the various new utility buildings, it is declared that the eldest son of papermaker, Thomas Bond (the younger) ... equipped with the honoured Magistrates' passports, was on the tenant's expense despatched to England to buy machines and several utilities for the prefection of the establishment about 1803 and around 1804 he moved to Sweden where he was hired by the Hamilton brothers at Huseby manor near Växjö as manager of the paper mill at Osby in Skatelövs parish. In October 1810 the parish priest Agrell noted that Thomas Bond with his wife Carolina Sophia Hallström (married 1804) and their three children intended to move to Denmark and they left the Osby Mill. Testimonial in English in the archives of Asarum parish (where the Strömma paper mill was situated, issued by minister Peter Warren in Topsham: The Son of Tho: and Mary Bond was baptized at the parish Church of Topsham in the 3 the day of March in the year of our Lord 1778. The above is a true copy taken from the Register book of the said parish of Topsham on the 2 day of February in the year of our Lord 1803 as witness our hands Peter Warren, minister, John Rexford, clarke. 2. daughter Elizabeth bap. 25 Feb 1782, Holy Trinity, Exeter (born 12th) who followed the family through Denmark to Sweden and died from anemia 1822. 3. Thome born born 20 Oct 1794, Søllerød, Copenhagen with Mary Steer as mother (he was from the beginning called and baptized Thome but later in his life called Thomas). 4. George born 15 Aug 1796, Søllerød, Denmark. 5. Louisa Hanna born in 1798 in Søllerød at Copenhagen, died 1803 in Asarum. His wife Mary followed him to Copenhagen, but she either died 25 June 1801 at Strömma Mill. Married: at Strömma on 12 Dec 1802 the children's governess, a dean's daughter, Maria Sophia Thomée (born 15 / 2 1776 Ravlunda). Children: 1. Wihelmina Mary born 13 Jan 1803, Asarum. 2. Christian Vollehard born 17 May 1804, Asarum. 3. Elsa Agneta born 23 May 1805, Asarum (portrait survives). 4. Nancy born 14 Nov 1807, Asarum. 5. Gustaf born 20 Apr 1809, Asarum. 6/7. Robert and Karl George born c. 1815, both died 1822. Died: probably in England 1824. Insured Higher and Lower Millhouses in own tenure, Sun insurance policy 408513 1778/9, Guildhall Lib. ms. 11,937/271. Two paper mills in possession of Thomas Bond for sale EFP 12/1/1781. The Topsham land tax assessments for 1781 and 1782 list Thomas Bond as the proprietor of "Northmore's Mills" with Abraham Cowley as occupier, assessed at £1 6s. The mills appear to have been purchaed by Thomas Chorlock, who is listed as the proprietor of "Bond's mills" in 1783. He may have worked at one of the mills in Exeter, perhaps Trew's Wear, in the 1780s. In 1794 Thomas IV moved to Denmark, where he spent five years at the newly built paper mill "New Mill" in Søllerød, in Sokkelunds district just north of Copenhagen. Two entrepreneurial tanners from England, Nelthropp and Harris, had been granted favourable loans by the Danish government to start factories in Denmark. They even started a paper mill in the “English method”. In 1799 Thomas IV arrived in Asarum parish, near the town Karlshamn in Blekinge, at Strömma Mill, Sweden from Denmark. The family moved in 1811 to Österlen a new paper mill, established by his brother in law at Ramnakulla in Skåne (in Southern Sweden). This mill was closed down about 1815. Thomas is said to have absconded from Sweden and his swedish wife & 10 living descendants c.1823. There is a tale among the descendants that a relative of Thomas IV Sarah Bond died in England in 1821 leaving a great legacy. Thomas Bond is believed to have travelled to England to acquire the legacy, but he disappeared and was declared dead by Swedish authorities in 1824.
